Kalamurina, SA

Kalamurina Wildlife Sanctuary, established in 2007, spans 679,667 hectares in South Australia's arid interior. It connects Kati Thanda-Lake Eyre National Park and the Munga-Thirri-Simpson Desert Reserves, forming a protected area larger than Tasmania. The sanctuary encompasses diverse habitats, including pink and white dunefields, ephemeral lakes, floodplains, and gibber plains. Over 65% of the water flowing into Kati Thanda-Lake Eyre passes through Kalamurina, with the Warburton Creek as its major source. This stretch of the Warburton Creek is the only section managed for conservation. The sanctuary is home to seven threatened species, including the Crest-tailed Mulgara, Dusky Hopping Mouse, and Eyrean Grasswren. Visitors can experience unpowered camping from May 1st through September 30th, with facilities including non-potable water, composting toilets, and a communal shade shelter. Access is limited to five vehicles at a time, and bookings are essential. Please note that tours and camping are temporarily unavailable due to severe flooding; check for updates before planning a visit.
