Hail Creek Mine, situated 120 kilometers southwest of Mackay in Queensland's Bowen Basin, is a prominent open-cut coal mining operation. Established in 2003, it produces both hard coking and thermal coal, exporting approximately 9.4 million tonnes annually through the Dalrymple Bay Coal Terminal. The mine extracts coal from two primary seams: the Elphinstone Seam, averaging 6.4 meters in thickness, and the Hynds Seam, averaging 8.3 meters. Utilizing dragline, truck, and shovel methods, Hail Creek Mine is managed by Glencore Australia, with joint venture partners Nippon Steel Australia, Marubeni Coal, and Sumisho Coal Development.
