Port Arthur, TAS

The Government Gardens at Port Arthur Historic Site, established in 1846-47 by Commandant Champ, were designed as an ornamental retreat for officers and their families, offering a peaceful escape from the convict settlement. Laid out with symmetrical pathways and topiary, the gardens symbolized civilized behavior and idealized womanhood. After the settlement's closure in 1877, the gardens fell into neglect until their faithful reconstruction in 2001, based on mid-19th-century photographs, drawings, and botanical studies. Today, visitors can enjoy a variety of plants, including those native to England, Africa, South America, and Asia, reflecting the diverse origins of the original flora.
