Dawson Mine

Dawson Mine, situated in the Dawson Valley of Central Queensland, Australia, is a prominent open-cut coal mining operation. Established in 1961, it has been a significant contributor to the region's economy and coal production. The mine is a joint venture between Anglo American (51%) and Mitsui & Co. Ltd. (49%), with Anglo American serving as the operator. It comprises three active pits: North, Central, and South, collectively covering an area of approximately 308.75 km². The mine primarily produces metallurgical and thermal coal, with a total resource of 815 million tonnes and mineable reserves of 97 million tonnes as of 2022. Coal extracted from Dawson Mine is transported via rail to the Port of Gladstone for export to international markets, including Japan, South Korea, Taiwan, and India. The mine has a workforce of around 1,300 employees and contractors, reflecting its substantial role in the local community. Dawson Mine is recognized for its commitment to sustainable mining practices, including extensive land rehabilitation efforts to restore mined areas for future agricultural use.
