Darwin River Dam, located approximately 50 kilometers south-southeast of Darwin, serves as the primary water source for the city. Constructed in 1972, this embankment-type dam has a capacity of 259,000 megalitres, making it one of the largest in Australia. The dam relies on the annual wet season for replenishment and is ungated, often overflowing toward the end of the wet season. To preserve water quality, public access is restricted, and recreational activities are prohibited within the catchment area.
