Located 550 km north of Adelaide, BHP's Olympic Dam is a significant poly-metallic underground mine, producing copper, gold, silver, and uranium. The mine features over 450 km of underground roads and tunnels, with ore transported via an automated train system to surface facilities. The integrated processing plant includes grinding and concentrating circuits, a hydrometallurgical plant with solvent extraction for copper and uranium, a copper smelter, refinery, and precious metal recovery circuits. BHP is advancing plans to expand the smelter and refinery, aiming to increase annual copper production to up to 650,000 tonnes by the mid-2030s.
