Bell Bay, located on the eastern shore of the Tamar River in northern Tasmania, is a vibrant industrial hub and port. Serving as Tasmania's primary port, it handles a diverse range of cargo, including bulk commodities and general cargo. The port features 12 berths with a draft depth of 11.2 meters, accommodating various vessel sizes. Adjacent to the port, the Bell Bay aluminium smelter, operated by Rio Tinto, produces 178,000 tonnes of aluminium annually. The area is also home to the Liberty manganese smelter, the only commercial ferroalloy operation in Australia. In June 2024, the Bell Bay Power Station was decommissioned to make way for the Bell Bay Powerfuels Project, aiming to produce 300,000 tonnes of renewable, green methanol per year. The Mission to Seafarers provides support services to seafarers in Bell Bay, offering facilities such as internet access, a shop, and indoor sports.
