Umuwa serves as the administrative hub for the Anangu Pitjantjatjara Yankunytjatjara (APY) Lands, overseeing governance and services for the region. Established in 1991, it houses the APY Executive Board and various non-government agencies, including Nganampa Health, which provides community-controlled health services, and PY Media, offering radio programming and multimedia services. The centre also accommodates state government personnel from Police, Housing, Corrections, and Families and Communities. Community amenities are limited, with a public phone and diesel fuel available, and mail arriving weekly by air.
