The Painted Cliffs on Maria Island, Tasmania, showcase stunning sandstone formations adorned with vibrant red, orange, and yellow patterns. These colors result from iron oxide staining, a process where groundwater rich in iron percolates through the sandstone, leaving behind these vivid hues. Over time, wave action and sea spray have further sculpted the cliffs, creating mesmerizing honeycomb patterns, potholes, and notches. To safely access the rock platform beneath the cliffs, it's best to visit within two hours of low tide. The cliffs are best viewed during low tide to allow safer access.
