Nestled in a secluded valley along the Howqua River, Howqua Hills Historic Area is a picturesque destination rich in natural beauty and history. Once a bustling gold mining hub, the area now offers a serene environment surrounded by Manna Gums and Narrow-Leaved Peppermints. Approximately an hour's drive from Mansfield, it is a favored spot for picnics, horse riding, bushwalking, fishing, and four-wheel driving. Visitors can camp along the riverbanks at sites like Blackbird, Fry's, Sheepyard North and South, Davon's, Noonan's, Pickerings, and Tunnel Bend Flat, all free of charge and accessible by 2WD vehicles. The Howqua Hills Historic Walk, a 4 km return trail, follows the river from Sheepyard Flat to Fry's Flat, passing historic relics from the gold mining era. Horse riding is permitted seasonally from November to May, with designated horse camping sites at Fry's Flat and Tunnel Bend Flat. Dogs are allowed but must be on a leash at all times. Before visiting, it's advisable to check for any updates or changes to conditions.
