Thanes Creek Fossicking Area, located approximately 40 kilometers west of Warwick, offers enthusiasts a chance to explore its rich geological history. Accessible via Big Hill Road, the area is renowned for its alluvial gold deposits found in the gullies and creeks. Visitors can also discover a variety of ancient rocks, including sandstone, mudstone, conglomerate, slate, chert, jasper, and limestone, dating from the Devonian to Carboniferous periods. Panning is the primary method for gold recovery, with the area often dry but retaining pools after good rains. Camping is prohibited on-site, but accommodations are available in nearby Warwick.
