Terry Hie Hie, NSW

Terry Hie Hie Aboriginal Area, established in 2005, is a significant cultural reserve located near the town of Terry Hie Hie in New South Wales. Once a vital ceremonial and gathering place for the Gamilaroi (Gomeroi, Gamileroi, Gamileraay) People, the area now offers visitors a tranquil environment to explore its rich heritage. The reserve features at least 240 axe-grinding grooves, a corroboree ground, a bora ring, carved and scarred trees, and two Aboriginal cemeteries. The local community and descendants of traditional custodians frequently visit for cultural, recreational, and educational purposes. The area is home to a diverse range of native wildlife, including woodland birds, mammals, and reptiles, thriving in the lush cypress pine and silver leaf ironbark woodlands. Visitors can enjoy picnicking, birdwatching, and walking along the Yana-y Warruwi track, which showcases the area's natural beauty and cultural significance. An innovative educational program provides teachers and students with a unique opportunity to learn about the language, history, and culture of the Gamilaroi People.
