Palen Creek Correctional Centre, established in 1934, is Queensland's first open prison facility, emphasizing rehabilitation through agricultural work and community service. Situated on a 600-acre farm, it houses 170 low-security male inmates who engage in vocational training, industry-based employment, and general education programs. The centre's industries include cattle farming, vegetable and fruit cultivation, and egg production, supplying its kitchens. Additionally, inmates craft unique native bee motels from recycled timber, supporting local biodiversity. Celebrating its 90th anniversary in 2024, Palen Creek continues to foster community ties and provide meaningful rehabilitation opportunities.
