Barren Grounds Nature Reserve, nestled atop Jamberoo Pass, offers a unique escape into a landscape encircled by rocky cliffs. The reserve boasts a diverse array of birdlife, including honeyeaters, southern emu wrens, and crimson rosellas, with approximately 180 species recorded. In spring, the heathland bursts into color with wildflowers, creating picturesque walking tracks ranging from easy 2km strolls to more challenging 20km hikes. Visitors can enjoy panoramic views of the Illawarra coastline from lookouts like Illawarra and Cooks Nose. The Barren Grounds picnic area provides a secluded spot among bloodwood and silvertop ash trees, ideal for relaxation and family outings. Facilities include picnic tables, non-flush toilets, and a gravel carpark. The reserve is open daily from 9 am to 5 pm, with free entry. Please note, pets and smoking are not permitted within the reserve.
