The area is primarily agricultural, with farming activities such as crop cultivation and livestock raising being central to its economy. The Glenmorgan railway line traverses the locality from the south-east (Kumbarilla) to the south-west (Goranba), and Weranga is served by Weranga railway station on Weranga North Road. The name 'Weranga' is believed to be an Aboriginal word meaning a large gathering of Aboriginal Australians.
