Hornsdale Power Reserve, located approximately 15 km north of Jamestown in South Australia, is the world's first large-scale lithium-ion battery, providing essential grid-support services. Completed in November 2017 with an initial capacity of 100 MW/129 MWh, it saved South Australian consumers over $150 million in its first two years. An expansion in September 2020 increased its capacity to 150 MW/194 MWh, incorporating Tesla's Virtual Machine Mode to offer inertia support to the electricity grid. The facility is co-located with the Hornsdale Wind Farm, enhancing renewable energy integration.
