Located 120 kilometers southwest of Mackay in Queensland's Bowen Basin, Hail Creek Open Cut Mine is a significant coal operation producing both metallurgical and thermal coal for export. The mine employs approximately 1,090 individuals and has a saleable product output of 8.2 million tonnes. In 2024, it contributed $1.7 billion to the economy and spent $1 billion on goods and services. Product coal is transported 100 kilometers by rail to the Dalrymple Bay Coal Terminal for export. Glencore holds an 84.67% stake in the mine, managing operations on behalf of a joint venture with Marubeni (12%) and Sumitomo (3.33%).
