South Wellesley Islands

The South Wellesley Islands, located in Queensland's Gulf of Carpentaria, comprise a group of islands including Allen, Horseshoe, Albinia, Bentinck, Fowler, and Sweers Islands. Bentinck Island, the largest, was historically inhabited by the Kaiadilt people, who speak the Kayardild language. Sweers Island features a small private resort and is known for its fishing opportunities, offering species like sweetlip, coral trout, and red emperor. The islands' tropical savanna climate provides warm temperatures year-round, with a wet season from November to March and a dry season from April to October. The area is also home to diverse flora and fauna, including mangroves, eucalypt woodlands, and a variety of marine life. Access to the islands is limited, with transportation options primarily by boat or small aircraft.
