Historically, New Chum was named after the New Chum mine, which operated in the area from the late 1800s until the end of the 20th century. In 1964, dinosaur footprints were discovered in the region, providing valuable paleontological insights. Today, New Chum is primarily residential, offering a quiet and secluded environment. Its proximity to major highways and the Ipswich Motorway provides convenient access to surrounding areas. The suburb is also near the Riverview-Moggill Ferry Road, facilitating easy travel to neighboring suburbs.
