The Mount Morgan Mine, established in 1882, was once among the world's most productive gold mines, yielding approximately 262 metric tons of gold, 37 metric tons of silver, and 387,000 metric tons of copper over its 99-year operation. The site features the iconic Big Stack chimney, constructed to disperse fumes from copper production, and the Open Cut Pit, a significant excavation resulting from mining activities. Additionally, the Fireclay Caverns, excavated for clay used in brickworks, contain early Jurassic dinosaur footprints, offering a unique glimpse into prehistoric life. Today, the Queensland Government manages the site, offering guided tours that delve into its rich mining history and geological significance.
