Buchanan is a rural locality in South Australia's Mid North region, situated within the Regional Council of Goyder. Established in August 2000, it honors the long-standing local name. The area was reportedly named after Alexander Buchanan, the first manager of Anlaby Station; however, its origin remains uncertain. Historically, Buchanan School operated from 1926 until 1946, after which the building served as Buchanan Hall until 1979. The former unbounded locality of Kooninderie lies on the boundary between Buchanan and adjacent Hansborough.
