Badjaling

Badjaling, located in Western Australia's Wheatbelt region, is a small town approximately 155 km east of Perth. Established in 1914, it was originally named Yuruga before adopting the name Badjaling, derived from the Aboriginal term for the nearby soak and springs. The town is situated near the Salt River and is approximately 10 km east of Quairading. The area is known for the Badjaling Nature Reserve, a 272-hectare reserve of native bushland managed by the Department of Parks and Wildlife. Vegetation consists of shrubland, woodland, a complex of halophytes occurring in a saline watercourse, and a small amount of heath. The woodland is mostly composed of low, shrublike trees of Banksia and Xylomelum. A 1980 survey recorded 111 plant species in the reserve, but this did not include the endangered Banksia cuneata (Quairading Banksia), which was discovered there in 1971 but not published until 1981.
