The Aquarius Festival, held from May 12 to 23, 1973, in Nimbin, New South Wales, was a transformative event that celebrated alternative thinking and sustainable lifestyles. Organized by the Australian Union of Students, it attracted between 5,000 and 10,000 attendees and is often described as Australia's equivalent to the Woodstock Festival. The festival marked the first time in Australia’s history that traditional Aboriginal landowners were asked permission to use their land for an event. Many participants chose to remain in Nimbin, leading to the establishment of self-sustainable communes and a lasting impact on the region's culture and economy.
